How to Read Your Natal Chart in 5 Steps (Beginner's Guide)

Before you start: calculate your chart

You'll need three pieces of data: date, time and city of birth. The time is essential — without it, your Rising sign and houses will be inaccurate. If you don't know it, check your birth certificate.

Step 1 — Start with the big three

Sun, Moon and Rising account for most of what you recognize as "personality." Read all three before anything else, and notice the tensions between them: an Aries Sun with a Cancer Moon, for example, lives the conflict between acting fast and protecting their emotional world.

Step 2 — Count the elements

Add up how many planets you have in Fire, Earth, Air and Water signs. An excess of one element shows your comfort zone; a lack shows what you need to develop consciously. Someone with no planets in Earth, for instance, tends to have great ideas and trouble executing them consistently.

Step 3 — Mercury, Venus and Mars

The three personal planets complete the portrait: Mercury shows how you think and communicate, Venus what you value and how you love, Mars how you act and fight. They're usually in signs close to your Sun, but when they sit in very different signs, they explain important inner contradictions.

Step 4 — Look at the angular houses

Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are the most powerful in the chart: identity, roots, relationships and career. Planets in these houses take center stage in your life. Saturn in the 7th house, for example, points to relationships that demand (and teach) maturity.

Step 5 — Only then, the aspects

Aspects are the angles between planets (conjunction, opposition, square, trine). They refine the reading, but they're the most advanced step — don't start with them. A beginner's rule of thumb: prioritize tight aspects (orb under 3°) involving the Sun, Moon or Rising.

The most common mistake

Reading each placement in isolation as if it were a verdict. The chart is a system: a shy Leo Sun can exist — all it takes is a Virgo Moon in the 12th house next to it. Always interpret the whole, and distrust any reading that sounds like a permanent label.
